Holographic vs clear stickers
Holographic when the sticker should be noticed — merch, packaging seals, anything that has to catch a passing eye. Clear when it should not be seen at all, only the design on the glass.
| Holographic | Clear | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the effect comes from | A prismatic film under the print, not the ink | There is no effect — the surface shows through |
| Best artwork | Open space and light areas, so the shift can show | Anything, as long as pale colors are not over a dark surface |
| Best for | Merch, band and event stickers, seals meant to be noticed | Jars, bottles, shop windows, vehicle glass |
| On dark surfaces | Still shifts — the film carries it | Pale ink reads faintly |
| Outdoors | Yes, waterproof | Yes, waterproof |

The shift comes from the material
The rainbow is not printed. It is a prismatic film underneath, and it moves as the sticker moves, which is why a photograph never quite shows what the sticker does in the hand.
That has one practical consequence for artwork: solid dark coverage hides the film. A design with open space, light areas or thin lines lets the shift come through — a heavy black silhouette will mostly cover it up.
Clear is the opposite instinct
Clear vinyl exists to disappear. Everything you did not print stays see-through, so on a jar the label reads as if it were printed on the glass and the product behind it stays visible.
Use it when the surface is part of the design. Use holographic when the surface is just somewhere the sticker happens to sit.
What they share
Both are waterproof vinyl with permanent adhesive, and both are cut to the outline of your artwork. Neither choice trades away durability — they trade away attention.

Questions people ask
- Do holographic stickers work on dark surfaces?
- Yes. The rainbow shift comes from the film under the print, so it carries on a black laptop lid the same way it does on a white box.
- Will my logo still look like my brand colors on holographic film?
- Colors print over the film, so they read close to normal in the darker areas and pick up the shift in the lighter ones. The free proof shows the layout before printing; if exact brand color matters everywhere, white vinyl is the safer material.
- Are holographic stickers waterproof?
- Yes — waterproof vinyl, so outdoors and dishwashers are fine.
