How to get sticker residue off clothes

Keep the garment out of the dryer until the residue is gone, because heat sets the glue into the fibers. Work a drop of dish soap into the spot, let it sit for ten minutes and wash the garment as usual. If glue is still there, harden it with an ice cube and pick it off, or dab it with rubbing alcohol after testing the fabric on an inside seam. Check the spot before drying; repeat until it is clean.

MethodGood forCareful with
Dish soap and a normal wash Fresh residue on everyday cotton and blends Nothing - always try this first
Ice cube, then pick or scrape off Thick, gummy glue that sits on top of the fabric Delicate knits - pick, do not scrape
Rubbing alcohol, dabbed Thin residue that soap left behind Dyes and synthetics - test an inside seam first
Masking tape, pressed and lifted Small bits of glue and paper fluff Loose weaves and wool

The one mistake to avoid

Sticker adhesive softens with heat and then hardens as it cools - inside the fibers if it got there in a hot dryer. That is when residue becomes a stain. Air-dry the garment until you have checked that the spot is clean.

The same goes for an iron: heat moves the glue, it does not remove it. Leave it for fabrics where the other methods have failed and the care label allows heat.

Gentlest first

Start with a drop of dish soap rubbed in with your fingers or a soft toothbrush, a few minutes' wait, and a normal wash at the temperature the label allows. Most fresh residue - from a name sticker, a price tag or a kid's sticker sheet - comes out at this step.

If glue is still there, rub an ice cube on it until it is hard and brittle, then pick it off with a fingernail. For a thin film, dab rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad from the back of the fabric, after testing it on an inside seam, and wash again.

Stickers that are meant for clothes

Our stickers are laminated vinyl with a permanent adhesive, made for hard surfaces - laptops, bottles, boxes, cars. They are not made for clothing, and we do not sell them as name tags for shirts.

If a sticker ended up in the wash on a shirt pocket, the steps above are the way out.

Questions people ask

Will sticker residue come out in the wash?
Often, if you work a little dish soap into the spot first and air-dry the garment afterwards. A normal wash alone may only spread it.
What if the garment already went through the dryer?
Try the soap and alcohol steps anyway, several times. Heat-set residue comes out more slowly and sometimes not completely, especially on synthetics.
Is rubbing alcohol safe on clothes?
On most cottons and sturdy blends, yes. Test it on an inside seam first, because it can lift some dyes and affect some synthetics.
How do I get a sticker label off a new shirt?
Peel it slowly while the fabric is cold, then use masking tape to lift any glue left behind, and wash the shirt before the first wear.
Can I use nail polish remover?
We would not. Acetone damages acetate, triacetate and many synthetic fabrics and can strip color. Soap, ice and alcohol are safer.
