How to remove stickers from glass
Peel the sticker slowly at a low angle, then wet the residue with rubbing alcohol or warm soapy water and push it off with a razor scraper held almost flat against the wet glass. Plain glass is hard enough for a sharp blade; scratches come from dry glass, a dull blade or grit. Never scrape tinted film, coated or low-E glass, or the defroster lines on a car's rear window - use a plastic scraper and patience there.
| Glass | Best method | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shop or house window | Alcohol or soapy water, then a razor scraper flat on wet glass | Window film and low-E coatings - check before you scrape |
| Mirror | Alcohol on a cloth, plastic scraper | Water running into the mirror's edge, where it can damage the silvering |
| Glass jar or bottle | Soak in warm soapy water, then oil for what is left | Boiling water on cold glass |
| Car side window | Alcohol, then a razor scraper flat on wet glass | Tint film on the inside surface |
| Car rear window | Warmth and alcohol, a plastic scraper only | Razors across the defroster lines |

Plain glass: wet, flat, sharp
Glass is harder than steel dust and most grit, which is why a new razor blade in a holder is the standard tool for window cleaners. The rule is simple: the glass must be wet, the blade must be new, and it must lie almost flat, pushed in one direction rather than sawn back and forth.
Wet the area with soapy water or rubbing alcohol, push the blade under the edge of the residue in short strokes, and wipe the blade often so nothing gets dragged across the glass. Finish with glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.
Glass you should not scrape
Many windows are not plain glass on the surface. Tinted film on a car or a building, low-E and reflective coatings, and the printed defroster lines on a rear window all sit on top of the glass and a blade will cut straight through them.
On those, soften the residue with warmth and alcohol, then roll it off with your thumb or a plastic scraper. It takes longer, and that is the point: nothing scratches the coating.
Signs on glass that come off clean
If what is on the glass changes - a sale, opening hours, a seasonal display, a 'for sale' notice on a car - a static cling saves the whole job. It has no glue, holds on clean glass by static and peels off in one piece, ready to go back up next time.
For glass on a shop front, our clings are printed in Mirror position by default, so they go on the inside of the window and read correctly from the street. For a sign that stays for years, an adhesive decal is the better choice.

Questions people ask
- Will a razor blade scratch glass?
- Not plain glass, if the blade is new, the glass is wet and the blade lies almost flat. Scratches come from grit, a dull blade or dry glass - and from coatings and films, which a blade cuts through.
- How do I get sticker residue off a mirror?
- Use rubbing alcohol on a cloth rather than spraying the mirror, and lift the residue with a plastic scraper. Keep liquid away from the edges, where it can reach the silver backing.
- How do I remove a sticker from a glass jar?
- Soak the jar in warm soapy water until the label slides off, then rub the remaining glue with a little cooking oil and wash the jar again.
- Can I scrape a sticker off a tinted car window?
- Not if the tint is a film on the inside of the glass - a blade will cut it. Soften the residue with warmth and alcohol and use a plastic scraper.
- What is the safest way to take a decal off a storefront window?
- Warm the decal with a hair dryer, peel it back slowly at a low angle, then clean the residue with alcohol and a razor scraper if the glass is plain, or a plastic scraper if it has film or a coating.
- Is there a window sign that leaves no residue?
- Yes - a static cling. It holds by static with no adhesive, so it comes off clean and can be used again.
