Stickers vs roll labels

Order stickers when the shape is part of the design and people will apply them one at a time. Order roll labels when the same label goes onto a batch of products and speed of application matters more than shape.

The difference is how they are applied, not what they are called

People use both words for the same object, and shops use them inconsistently, so the useful question is not what to call it. It is whether you are applying one at a time or many in a row.

A roll exists to make repetition fast: the labels come off in sequence, one after another, at the speed of a hand, and they feed a desktop applicator if you have one. A loose die-cut sticker exists to be given to a person or placed deliberately. Order the format that matches the motion you are going to make a hundred times.

What a roll gives up in exchange

Shape and size. Our labels come as circles from 1.5" to 3.5", an oval at 3"x2", and rectangles at 4"x1.5" and 4"x2.5" - a fixed menu rather than a free choice, because a roll has to be a consistent width to feed properly. There is no custom size and no cutting to an outline.

Water behavior differs too, and it is the difference people get wrong most often. Our roll labels are not laminated, and we publish no water, refrigeration or oil rating for them, so treat them as labels for dry packaging. Stickers are laminated vinyl and genuinely waterproof, which is why a water bottle, a cooler or anything that comes out of the fridge wet is a sticker job.

When a product needs both

A small food or candle business usually ends up with two orders, and that is the right answer rather than a compromise. The product itself gets a roll label - the scent, the origin, the weight - because there are eighty jars to label and they all say the same thing.

The packaging gets stickers: a die-cut seal on the mailer, a thank-you circle on the tissue, a logo on the box. Those are applied one at a time, look better cut to a shape, and go onto surfaces that get wet in transit.

What neither of them does

Variable data. Every item in a run prints identically, so a batch number, a roast date or a sequential number that changes from one label to the next is not something we print. The usual answers are a blank area written on by hand, or a small second label.

Neither format is offered with a removable adhesive either. Both are meant to stay where you put them, which is worth knowing before labeling anything you plan to reuse.

Questions people ask

Is there a difference in print quality?
No. Both are printed on the same press from the same file, and both get a free online proof before anything is printed. The differences are in shape, size range, water rating and how they arrive.
Can I get roll labels cut to my logo shape?
No. Roll labels come as circles, ovals and rectangles in a fixed set of sizes. Cutting to an outline is what die-cut stickers do.
Which is better for a jar?
A roll label, in almost every case - jar mouths are standard sizes, the labels match them, and a batch of jars is a repetitive job. Stickers make sense on a jar only when the shape of the design is the whole point.
Do roll labels work with a desktop label applicator?
They come on standard cores that fit most desktop applicators. If yours needs a particular core size or unwind direction, put it in the order notes and we confirm it before printing.
Can I get labels on sheets instead of a roll?
Ask in the order notes. The site sells them on rolls, and a sheet format is something to confirm with us before you order rather than an option you can pick on the page.
