How to get it right
Room for content that has to be read
Most posters work on a headline; a 36x40 works on content. Three feet by a little over three feet is enough room for an illustrated city map, a family-history timeline, a classroom chart or a display of research results with type that can still be read from a short distance. The almost-square shape gives a map or a diagram space to grow in both directions instead of leaving empty bands at the sides. It also fits a seating chart for a wedding or gala, where names need to be large enough to find in a crowd.
Layout for maps, timelines and charts
Choose one hierarchy and stay with it. Put the title across the top, group related items in clear blocks, and use a consistent grid so people know where to look next. For a map, keep the legend in a corner away from the key area; for a timeline, run the dates along the longer side. Text that has to be read standing close can be smaller; anything that has to be read from a few steps back should be much larger than you expect. A vector PDF keeps fine lines and small labels sharp at this size.
File size, proof and delivery
For a raster design, 10800 by 12000 pixels gives 300 DPI at full 36x40 size, and a vector PDF, AI or EPS stays sharp at any size. The proof is free, our designer tells you before the proof if the resolution will show, and nothing prints until you approve. Production takes 2 business days after you approve the proof, then shipping within the US is free and takes 3-5 business days by USPS. Posters this size are rolled in a tube, not folded. The paper is for indoor display, or outdoors only in a dry covered spot.
Questions people ask about these
Can I order just one 36x40 poster?
Yes. One poster per design is a normal order, with the same free proof as a larger run. The per-piece rate goes down from the second copy of the same design.
What resolution do I need for 36x40?
A vector PDF, AI or EPS is ideal. For a photo or raster file, 10800 by 12000 pixels gives 300 DPI at full size. Lower resolutions still print, just softer, and our designer tells you before the proof if it will show.
Is 36x40 a good size for a map?
Yes. It gives a map space to run in both directions, with room for a legend and a title. A vector map keeps fine lines and labels sharp at this size.
Can I print a seating chart at 36x40?
Yes. At this size names can be set large enough to find in a crowd. Check the proof carefully for spelling, since nothing prints until you approve it.
Is 36x40 a standard size in your calculator?
Yes. It is one of the listed sizes, so you can pick it directly. Custom sizes are also available from 8 inches on the short side up to 48x72.
How is a 36x40 poster shipped?
Rolled in a tube, not folded. Free US shipping by USPS takes 3-5 business days after 2 business days in production.
