How to get it right
The sizes that come up again and again
A few sizes come up again and again: 3x10 is the one seen most often, 11.5x3 and 12x4 are also common, 9x3 covers a shorter message, and ovals around 6x4 suit a badge-style design. None of these is an official standard - they are simply the shapes that fit a bumper and that people have settled on. The long, narrow proportion is not a style choice: a bumper is a long horizontal strip, and a sticker cut to match it sits flat and reads as one line instead of wrapping around a curve.
Measure the flat spot, not the car
Before typing a size into the calculator, measure the actual flat area on the bumper - not the bumper's total width. Modern bumpers curve, and many are textured plastic rather than flat painted metal, so the usable flat strip is often shorter and shallower than it looks. Hold a tape measure to the spot the sticker will actually sit and use that number. A tailgate or a rear window is a different surface with far more room, which is why a design meant for a full tailgate is usually sized much larger than a bumper strip - closer to 12x4 or a custom width well past it.
Letter height, reading distance, then any size you want
Signage has a rough rule of thumb: about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of reading distance. A car length behind is roughly 10 to 15 feet, so text under an inch tall starts to disappear before anyone can read it, whatever size the sticker itself is. Once the message and the letter size are set, the sticker size follows from them, not the other way around. Type the exact width and height the design needs into the calculator, in any combination, and the price recalculates for that size.
Questions people ask about these
What is the standard bumper sticker size?
There is no single official size. 3x10 is the most common, with 11.5x3 and 12x4 also common and 9x3 for a shorter message. Type any width and height into the calculator instead.
I need a size that is not listed. Can you still print it?
Yes. The size options are a starting point, not a limit - type the exact width and height you need into the calculator and the price adjusts to match.
Do rounded corners or a die-cut shape cost more than a square sticker?
No. Rounded corners and a full die-cut outline cost exactly the same as a plain rectangle at any size, so shape is a design choice, not a price decision.
How big should the text be on a bumper sticker?
A rough signage rule is about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of reading distance. A car length back is around 10 to 15 feet, so keep the main words at least an inch tall.
Should I order 3x10 or 11.5x3?
Both are common bumper sizes. Both are 3 inches tall; 11.5x3 adds an inch and a half of length for a longer name or a logo beside the text. Either can be typed into the calculator and priced.
What size fits a rear window instead of a bumper?
A rear window is much larger than a bumper strip, so most bumper sizes look small on it. For that surface, look at our clear decals or a static cling instead - both are sized and mounted differently than a bumper sticker.
Will I see a proof before I pay?
Yes, for most files. Upload your design and the proof appears on screen in seconds, with the cut line, at the size and shape you chose - before you pay. If a file needs a designer's eye, we email the proof instead, and changes are free until it is right. Nothing prints until you approve it.
