How to get it right
What a bumper sticker has to survive
A bumper faces more weather than almost anything else on a car: full sun for hours, rain, road spray, snow and salt in winter, and a trip through the car wash every few weeks. Plain vinyl print fades and scratches under that. Ours is laminated - a clear film bonded over the ink that blocks UV and takes the scratching instead of the color underneath. That is what lets us say the sticker is built to last up to 5 years outdoors in direct sunlight, rain, and snow. The laminate is standard on every order, glossy or matte, at no extra step.
Ten by three, and how many words fit
Ten inches by three is the size most bumper stickers use, because it matches the flat strip of bumper below a taillight without wrapping around a curve. Rounded corners or a full die-cut outline cost exactly the same as a plain rectangle, so there is no reason to default to sharp corners if the design calls for something else. Keep the message short: a name, a slogan, a phrase, nothing longer than a few words. A car length back is about fifteen feet, and that is the distance the text actually has to read at - anything smaller than an inch tall starts to disappear at that range.
The adhesive is permanent - here is what that means
Once a bumper sticker is pressed down, it is meant to stay. Apply it to a clean, dry surface and press from the center outward to push out air, and it stays put outdoors. There is no removable-adhesive version of this vinyl. Taking one off later means gentle heat from a hair dryer, a slow peel from one corner, and isopropyl alcohol to lift whatever residue is left. If the message is meant to change - a season, a fundraiser, a temporary event - print it as a static cling instead. Mirrored and mounted on the inside of the rear window, a cling reads correctly from outside and holds by static with no adhesive at all.
Funny, political, church or business: one sticker, many messages
Most bumper stickers are one of a handful of things: a joke, a candidate or a cause, a church or a school, or a business with a phone number and a website. They all print the same way - laminated vinyl at about 10 x 3 - but they are written differently. A joke needs the punchline in the biggest letters. A business needs the name and one way to reach you, nothing more, because a driver behind you gets a few seconds. A campaign sticker is usually ordered in larger runs for volunteers to hand out. The pages linked at the bottom of this one start from each of those.
Bumper or rear window
Many modern bumpers are textured or sharply curved plastic, and a sticker holds best on a smooth, flat spot. If your bumper does not have one, put the same sticker on the rear window instead - it sits on the outside of the glass, where it reads just as well from the car behind. Clean the spot with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry before you apply, whichever surface you choose.
Questions people ask about these
Is there a standard size for a bumper sticker?
Ten inches by three is the most common bumper sticker size, sized to the flat strip on most rear bumpers. Type any width and height into the calculator instead and the price recalculates.
Will it hold up to sun, rain and snow?
Yes. The vinyl is laminated and waterproof, and it is built to last up to 5 years outdoors in direct sunlight, rain, and snow. The laminate is what blocks the UV fade and the scratching a bare print would pick up.
How do I remove a bumper sticker?
The adhesive is permanent, so removal takes a little work: gentle heat from a hair dryer, a slow peel starting at one corner, then isopropyl alcohol on any residue left behind.
Can I order just a few?
Ten per design is the online minimum. Fifty is a normal quantity for a single design; choose whatever you need and the price per sticker adjusts.
How fast will my bumper stickers arrive?
A free digital proof goes out first, usually within a business day. Once you approve it, most orders ship the next business day, and free US shipping takes 3-5 business days from there.
Will removing a bumper sticker damage my paint?
It can, on paint that is already chipped or has been repainted - the adhesive can lift weak paint with it. Gentle heat, a slow peel, and isopropyl alcohol for residue are the gentlest way to take it off.
Will I see a proof before I pay?
Yes, for most files. Upload your design and the proof appears on screen in seconds, with the cut line, at the size and shape you chose - before you pay. If a file needs a designer's eye, we email the proof instead, and changes are free until it is right. Nothing prints until you approve it.
Do you make magnetic bumper stickers?
No - these are vinyl stickers with a permanent adhesive. If you need to take the message off often, a static cling on the inside of a non-tinted car window is the removable option: it holds by static, with no glue.
Can I make my own bumper sticker online?
Yes. Upload your design, type the size - 10 x 3 is the usual one - and the proof appears on screen in seconds with the cut line, before you pay. If a file needs a designer's eye, we email the proof instead, and changes are free until it is right.
