How to get it right
Where paper labels give up
A paper label drinks water. In a shower it curls, in a cooler it goes soft, and on a kitchen canister a single wet cloth leaves a gray edge. Vinyl does not absorb water, and the laminate over the print guards the ink from rubbing and splashes. That is why bottles of body wash, shaving soap, dish soap, drink coolers and garden tools all do better with a laminated vinyl label. This page is for product labels on things that live in wet places; for stickers in general, see waterproof stickers.
Get it to stick the first time
The adhesive is permanent, so the surface matters more than you might expect. Wipe the container clean, let it dry completely, and keep the area smooth: a label holds best on glass, glossy plastic, metal and sealed surfaces, and less well on a rough or dusty finish. If you can, apply the label before the container is filled, because a full bottle is slippery and cold liquid can fog the surface. Press from the center to the edges, then give it a little time before it meets water. A label pressed on carefully holds far better than one rushed.
Pick a shape that suits wet hands
Rounded corners are the quiet favorite for products handled with wet hands, since a sharp corner is where a label is most likely to start to lift. A circle or an oval shares that advantage. Any other outline costs the same, so a die cut that follows your logo is an option when you want a distinctive look. Glossy keeps colors rich and wipes clean; matte looks calmer and shows fewer water spots. If a product has more than one size of bottle, order each size as its own design, so every label is cut and proofed for the container it will actually sit on.
Questions people ask about these
Are your product labels really waterproof?
Yes. They are printed on white vinyl under a laminate, which is waterproof and dishwasher-safe. Water on the surface does not soak into the label or lift the print.
Can I use these labels in a shower or bathroom?
Yes. Humid air and splashes will not harm a laminated vinyl label. Apply it to a clean, dry bottle first, and give it a short while to set before the first wet use.
Will the label stay on a cooler or an ice bucket bottle?
The label itself is waterproof, so condensation will not ruin it. For the best hold, apply it to a clean, dry container at room temperature and press the edges flat.
How should I prepare the surface?
Clean it, dry it and make sure it is smooth. If you can, label the container before you fill it, and press the label on from the center outward.
What is the difference between this and waterproof stickers?
It is the same laminated vinyl. This page is set up for labels on product containers, with a label-sized preset and tips for wet places. Waterproof stickers covers stickers for bottles, gear and surfaces of every kind.
Can I choose matte for a waterproof label?
Yes. Matte and glossy are both laminated and cost the same. Both are waterproof, so the choice is about how you want the label to look.
