How to get it right
Gifts, weddings and home bottles
A wine label is a personal thing: the couple's names on every bottle at the reception, an anniversary year on a bottle saved for the occasion, a family name on holiday gifts, a home winemaker's first batch. One design makes one label, so a different message on each bottle means a separate design for each. Commercial wineries have federal label rules; these labels are for gifts, events and home bottles. If you are not sure which side of that line you are on, check the labeling rules that apply to your bottle.
Cover the old label or take it off
You have two choices. If your label is larger than the original, you can cover it, and a matte finish will not show a slight ridge underneath. If you prefer clean glass, soak the bottle in warm water, peel the old label off and scrub away the glue, then dry the bottle well. Our adhesive is permanent, so the new label is not meant to come off again; place it straight with a ruler or a strip of tape as a guide, and press from the middle outward. Take a photo of the bottle first, if you like, so you can check the position against it.
Matte or glossy on dark glass
On the dark glass of a red wine bottle, a cream or white label stands out either way. Matte gives a refined, printed-paper look and cuts glare under party lights. Glossy makes the colors of an illustration richer and the gold or green deeper. Both are laminated and cost the same, so choose by look, and ask for the proof in the finish you like. A tall rectangle suits a classic front label, while a die cut shaped like a crest or an arch can set your bottle apart from a shelf of ordinary ones.
Questions people ask about these
What size should a wine bottle label be?
Measure the flat part of the front of your bottle, below the neck, and keep the label inside it. This page starts at 3.5 x 4 inches for a 750 ml bottle, and you can enter any custom size.
Can I cover the label that is already on the bottle?
Yes, if your label is larger than the old one. For clean glass, soak the bottle, peel the label off, remove the glue and dry it before applying yours.
Should I choose matte or glossy for wine?
Matte looks refined and cuts glare; glossy deepens the colors of an illustration. Both are laminated and priced the same, so it comes down to taste.
Will the label hold up in a wine bucket?
Yes. The labels are waterproof, so ice and condensation will not make them run. Apply the label to a clean, dry bottle before it goes into the bucket.
Do these labels meet winery labeling rules?
Commercial wineries have federal label rules. These labels are made for gifts, events and home bottles, so check the labeling rules that apply to your situation if you plan to sell.
Can I put a different message on each bottle?
Every label in a run prints the same. For a different message, order each as its own design, with its own quantity and its own free proof.
