Custom holographic stickers in small quantities: nine printers compared

Minimums for custom holographic stickers run from one to fifty, and fifty is common. For a truly small run, MakeStickers takes an order of one, and Vistaprint single stickers, Sticker Mule samples and StickersFox start at ten. Choose by what should shine: at StickerYou and StickersFox the film shows through the lighter parts of the design, while Sticky Brand and Sticker Cheetah use white ink to switch the effect off where you ask.

Minimums, from one to fifty

Look at the minimum column before anything else. StickerGiant states fifty for holographic against ten for its standard die-cut stickers, and Sticky Brand, Sticker Cheetah and the Sticker Mule presets also start at fifty.

Below that, the list is short. MakeStickers has no minimum. Vistaprint single stickers start at ten, Sticker Mule offers samples from ten per design, and we print ten of one design as an ordinary order. StickerYou and Sticker Swan start at twenty-five and the StickerApp presets at thirty.

Where the rainbow comes from

There are two ways to make a holographic sticker. Either the base film is holographic and the ink goes on top of it, or a holographic laminate goes over an ordinary print. All nine printers here describe the first kind: the film itself carries the effect.

On that kind of sticker, ink hides the effect and bare film shows it. Pale and unprinted areas shimmer; solid dark colors sit on top and mostly cover it. Ours work that way - the effect is in the film, the colors print over it, and the lighter areas of a design pick up the shift.

White ink: a switch for the effect

Some printers add a layer of white ink under chosen parts of the design. White blocks the film completely, so a logo can stay in flat brand colors while the background moves. Sticky Brand and Sticker Cheetah describe this; at Sticky Brand you ask for it with a note or a layer in the file. StickerApp says the effect can cover the whole sticker or specific parts.

StickerYou and Vistaprint state that they do not use white ink on holographic film, so only your own colors cover the effect. If one part of your design must match a brand color exactly, choose a printer that offers white ink under it, or white vinyl for that job.

A proof cannot show the shine

A holographic proof is a flat picture. It shows the size, the cut line and where the ink is, and a flat image cannot show the film moving in the light. Our product page says so plainly, so nobody approves a flat picture expecting to see the rainbow in it.

What the proof can settle is everything else: the outline, the margins, whether small type is thick enough to stay readable over a busy background. A designer prepares ours, revisions are unlimited, and nothing prints until you approve it.

Size, speed and shipping

The effect needs room to show, which is why we suggest two by two inches as the floor and why most presets in the table start there. StickerYou, Sticky Brand, Vistaprint and the next-day line at Sticker Cheetah go smaller if you need a tiny seal.

On time, Sticker Cheetah lists one to three days, StickerApp one to two and MakeStickers two. Ours ship two business days after you approve the proof. What is the smallest order of custom holographic stickers?
MakeStickers states no minimum. Vistaprint single stickers and StickersFox start at ten, and Sticker Mule offers samples from ten. StickerYou and Sticker Swan start at twenty-five, the StickerApp presets at thirty and several others at fifty.
Will my whole design look holographic?
The unprinted and light areas show the film; solid dark colors mostly cover it. If you want part of the design in flat color with no shimmer, choose a printer that blocks the effect with white ink, such as Sticky Brand or Sticker Cheetah.
Can a proof show the holographic effect?
No. A proof is a flat image and shows layout, size and the cut line. The shine only exists on the film.
How small can a holographic sticker be?

Are holographic stickers waterproof?

StickersFox ships them two business days after proof approval. Sticker Cheetah lists one to three days and MakeStickers two. StickerGiant states that rush printing is not available for holographic.
