On real walls
How to get it right
Built for narrow walls
Many walls are tall and narrow: hallways, stairwell landings, the space beside a door, the strip between kitchen cabinets and the ceiling. A 24x40 fills that height without crowding the width. It suits a mountain or skyline panorama turned to portrait, a single large figure, a typographic print, a door poster for a shop or studio, or an indoor event notice that has to be read at full height. It also works as a height chart: put a ruler scale along one edge and hang it where kids can stand against it.
Designing on a 3:5 canvas
A 24x40 poster has a 3:5 ratio, taller than 2:3 photographs, so a standard camera photo will need a crop. Plan for it: let the subject run along the long axis and leave empty space where the crop will fall. For type, set the headline large in the top third and keep small details down the middle where they are easy to read at eye level. Use the orientation toggle for a horizontal version, for example over a long console table. Our designer checks the file before the proof and tells you if anything will not work at this shape.
File size, proof and delivery
For a raster design, 7200 by 12000 pixels gives 300 DPI at full 24x40 size, and a vector PDF, AI or EPS stays sharp at any size. The proof is free, changes are free, and nothing prints until you approve. Production takes 2 business days after you approve the proof, then shipping within the US is free and takes 3-5 business days by USPS. Posters this size are rolled in a tube rather than folded. The paper is for indoor display, or outdoors only in a dry covered spot such as under a roof.
Questions people ask about these
Can I order just one 24x40 poster?
Yes. One poster per design is a normal order, with the same free proof as a larger run. The per-piece rate goes down from the second copy of the same design.
What resolution do I need for 24x40?
A vector PDF, AI or EPS is ideal. For a photo or raster file, 7200 by 12000 pixels gives 300 DPI at full size. Lower resolutions still print, just softer, and our designer tells you before the proof if it will show.
Will a regular camera photo fit 24x40?
Not without a crop. A 3:2 photo is wider than the 3:5 shape of 24x40, so you will lose some of the sides in portrait. Choose the crop before you upload; the proof shows exactly what will print.
Is 24x40 a standard size in your calculator?
Yes. It is one of the listed sizes, so you can pick it directly. Custom sizes are also available from 8 inches on the short side up to 48x72.
Can I use a 24x40 poster as a height chart?
Yes. Add a ruler scale and numbers to your design and print it at full size. Check the scale against a tape measure when the poster arrives and hang it with the bottom edge at floor level.
How is a 24x40 poster shipped?
Rolled in a tube, not folded. Free US shipping by USPS takes 3-5 business days after 2 business days in production.
