How to get it right
The size decides where the poster can go
Sizes here run from 11"x14" up to 36"x48", and the practical question is not how big the design looks on a screen but where the paper has to fit. Community noticeboards and cafe windows take 11"x14" and 12"x18" without crowding out everyone else. The standard gig and event size is 18"x24" - large enough to read from across a room, small enough that a venue will actually put it up. Above 24"x36" you are printing a wall piece, which is the right call for a foyer and the wrong call for a lamppost.
What has to be on it, and what can come off
A poster is read at a glance and then, if it works, read again up close. The glance carries the name of the thing, the date and the place; everything else belongs to the second read. The most common failure is a poster that gives the design all the space and leaves the date small, so people remember the image and not the day. Put the date where the eye lands second and let the ticket link or the QR code take the bottom edge.
Timing, proof and how it arrives
Production is two business days after you approve the free online proof, and free US shipping takes 3-5 business days in transit. Posters up to 15" ship flat in a rigid mailer that will not bend; anything larger ships rolled in a sturdy mailing tube. Neither is ever folded, so the posters arrive without a crease across the artwork - worth knowing if they are going straight from the box onto a wall. Working back from the day the posters need to be up, allow the print, the transit and a day for the proof.
A printed poster reaches people your social post never will
An event page or an Instagram post only reaches people who already follow the account or happen to see it in a feed - a poster on a cafe corkboard or a gym door reaches someone with no idea the event exists until they walk past it. The two are not a substitute for each other: the printed poster is doing the job of introducing the event to a stranger, so it needs to carry the whole pitch - what it is, when, and where - without assuming the reader already knows the backstory a social caption could skip. Keep the design simple enough to work as a stranger's first look at the event, not a reminder for people already coming.
Reusing the design for next year's event
An annual event - a fun run, a festival, a fundraiser - rarely needs a new poster design every year, just a new date and maybe a new sponsor line. Keep the original artwork file rather than only the printed poster, so next year's order is a quick edit and a fresh proof instead of starting over. Editing the source file is far easier than working from the flattened PDF that went to print.
Questions people ask about these
What size should an event poster be?
Eighteen by twenty-four inches is the standard and the safest choice: readable across a room and accepted by most venues and noticeboards. Use 11"x14" or 12"x18" for crowded community boards, and 24"x36" or larger only where the poster has a wall to itself.
What paper do you print posters on?
A semi-gloss surface. It is chosen deliberately over full gloss because fully glossy posters can fuse to the glass of a frame when humidity changes, which damages the print when you take it out.
How are posters shipped?
Never folded. Posters up to 15" ship flat in a rigid mailer that will not bend, and larger ones ship rolled in a sturdy mailing tube, so there is no crease across the artwork. US shipping is free and takes 3-5 business days in transit.
How fast can I get them?
Two business days in production once you approve the free proof, then 3-5 business days in transit. For a dated event, count back from the day the posters must be up and leave the proof a day of its own.
Can I order just one poster?
Yes. One poster is a normal order here, with the same free proof as a larger run.
Can I put a QR code on the poster?
Yes, and the bottom edge is the usual place for it. Give it room - a code that is too small or too close to the edge is hard to scan from the distance a person actually stands at.
Should the poster repeat everything that's on the event's Instagram post?
No - assume the person looking at it has never seen your social posts. Put the full pitch on the poster: what it is, the date, the place and how to find out more, since it may be the first and only place someone hears about the event.
