How to get it right
Fit the flat front of a woozy bottle
A woozy bottle is narrow, with shoulders that curve inward at the top and a body that rounds toward the sides. A label that touches the curve will wrinkle, so keep it on the flat front with a margin on every side. Tape a paper cut-out to the bottle first, step back, and check that it reads at shelf distance and clears the neck, the shoulders and the base. Then enter the height and width of that cut-out in the calculator as a custom size. A tall label suits this bottle, and a second, smaller design for the back can carry the story or the heat level.
Flame, shield and pepper cutouts
Hot sauce is one of the few places where an unusual outline helps a sale. A flame-topped label, a shield, a pepper or a badge with notched corners makes a bottle recognizable from across a market table. Shape does not change the price, so a complicated edge costs the same as a straight one. Send your artwork with the shape as its outer edge; the designer prepares the cut line, and the proof shows exactly where the cut falls. Keep small type away from sharp points and thin tips, where the vinyl is narrowest.
Drips, market tables and gift sets
Sauce runs down a bottle. The laminate is waterproof and wipes clean, and the vinyl is made for outdoor use, which suits a market stall in the weather. Each flavor or heat level is a separate design and its own cart item with its own quantity, so a mild, a medium and a hot can ship in one order. If you sell your sauce, food labeling rules apply, so check the labeling rules that apply to your product before you approve a proof. For most files the proof appears on screen within seconds, so you can adjust and compare before you pay.
Questions people ask about these
What size label fits a woozy hot sauce bottle?
Measure the flat front of your bottle, because bottles vary. This page opens at 2.5 x 3.5 inches as a starting point for the flat panel. A label that wraps all the way around is a longer shape, and you can enter any custom size in the calculator.
Can the label be cut in the shape of a flame?
Yes. Any outline is die cut at the same price, whether a flame, a shield, a pepper or a badge. The proof shows the cut line before anything prints.
Will sauce drips ruin the label?
A drip wipes off the laminated vinyl with a cloth. The laminate is waterproof, so a wet bottle does not soak into the label.
Can I make a different label for each heat level?
Yes. Each design is a separate cart item with its own quantity and its own proof, so mild, medium and hot are three lines in one order.
Do I need anything special on a hot sauce label to sell it?
Food labeling rules can apply when you sell food, and we do not give regulatory advice. We print the file you send, so check the labeling rules that apply to your product before you approve a proof.
Glossy or matte for a hot sauce label?
They cost the same. Glossy gives red and orange a deep, wet-look color, and matte gives a flat, craft look. Choose one finish for the whole range so the bottles sit together as a set.
