How to get it right
The lid sizes are fixed, so the labels are too
Mason jar mouths come in two diameters and almost nothing else, which makes this the easiest sizing decision in labeling. A regular mouth measures about 2 3/8" across the lid, so a 2" circle sits on it with an even margin. A wide mouth measures about 3", so 2.5" is the match. Going larger on either overlaps the rim, where the label creases when the ring is screwed down.
Fronts, and what fits on a pint
The front of a 16 oz pint jar gives you a usable flat-looking band around three and a half inches wide before the curve starts eating the edges of a label, so 3" is the comfortable front size and 3.5" is the maximum. A 4"x2.5" rectangle is the alternative when the contents need more lines than a circle can hold - a preserve with a fruit, a batch and a date, for instance.
Permanent adhesive, and what a reused jar costs you
These labels sit on a permanent adhesive, so a jar you plan to relabel every season comes clean by soaking in hot soapy water and scrubbing rather than by a clean peel. That is the job each time, and it is worth knowing before the first run. We also publish no water or refrigeration rating for roll labels, so a jar that lives in the fridge or comes out of it wet is outside anything we will promise - for that, our die-cut vinyl stickers are the material built for moisture.
Questions people ask about these
What size label fits a mason jar lid?
Two inches for a regular-mouth lid, 2.5" for a wide-mouth one. Those two sizes cover almost every mason jar in use, because the mouth diameters are standardized.
What size goes on the front of a pint jar?
Three inches is comfortable and 3.5" is the practical maximum before the curve of the glass starts lifting the edges. If you need more lines of text, the 4"x2.5" rectangle holds more in the same visual space.
Can the jar go in the fridge?
We publish no refrigeration or water rating for roll labels, so we will not promise one. If the jar will be stored cold or come out of the fridge wet, our die-cut vinyl stickers are the material made for moisture.
Will the label come off if I reuse the jar?
Not easily. There is no removable adhesive option for roll labels, so expect soaking in hot soapy water and some scrubbing. If a jar is going to be relabelled every season, that is the job each time.
Do they come on a roll?
Yes, on standard cores that fit most desktop label applicators. If your applicator needs a particular core, put it in the order notes and we will confirm before printing.
How long do jar labels take to arrive?
Two business days in production after you approve the free proof, then free US shipping with 3-5 business days in transit.
