How to get it right
Measure the tube, then decide on the overlap
Use a strip of paper and a ruler rather than a guess. For the length, wrap the strip once around the barrel and mark where it meets itself. For the height, measure only the flat, straight part of the barrel, because a label that runs over a seam or a rim will not lie flat. Then decide whether the ends meet with a small gap or overlap slightly. A small overlap is more forgiving to apply, and a small gap keeps all of the artwork visible. Add your choice to the length and enter the final numbers as a custom size; custom sizes start at 1 x 2 inches.
Type that reads at a glance
A lip balm label is read in the hand, at arm's length. Give the flavor or scent its own line in the largest type that fits, and keep the brand mark small and near one end. Avoid thin strokes and tiny light-on-dark lettering, which blur at this size. Keep every letter inside a margin from the cut line so a small shift in application never clips a word. If you sell several flavors, change the flavor name and the accent color and keep everything else fixed, so the tubes look like one range. Every flavor is a separate design, so each one is its own item in the cart.
Pockets, purses and gift bags
Lip balm gets dropped in a coat pocket, pressed against keys and carried in a bag beside a water bottle. The vinyl is laminated and waterproof, and you can choose matte or glossy without a change in price. Apply the label to a clean, dry tube, starting at one edge and smoothing to the other so no air is trapped. A QR code in your design can lead to a flavor page or a reorder link. The proof shows the cut line before anything prints, and nothing prints until you approve it.
Questions people ask about these
What size is a standard lip balm label?
Tubes vary, so we do not state one size. Wrap a strip of paper around your tube, mark where it meets, and measure the flat height of the barrel. This page opens at 2 x 1 inches as a starting point; change it to your own measurements in the calculator.
Can I order a different label for each flavor?
Yes. Each flavor is its own design and its own item in the cart, with a quantity and a proof of its own. Keep the layout identical and change only the flavor name and the accent color so they look like a set.
Are lip balm labels waterproof?
Yes. They are printed on white vinyl under a laminate, and the laminate is waterproof, so they suit a pocket, a purse or a bag.
Should the ends of the wrap overlap?
Either works. A small overlap is more forgiving to apply, and a small gap keeps the full artwork in view. Whichever you choose, allow for it in the length you enter.
Matte or glossy for a lip balm label?
They cost the same. Glossy suits bright flavor colors, and matte suits a natural, earthy look. Pick one finish across all your flavors.
Do I need to follow labeling rules for lip balm?
Lip balm that you sell may fall under cosmetic labeling rules. We print the file you send and do not give regulatory advice, so check the labeling rules that apply to your product before you finalize the artwork.
