How to get it right
How small a printed QR code can get
About one inch square is the practical floor for a code someone scans with a phone held normally, and printed guides broadly agree on it. The rule of thumb behind it is that scanning distance is roughly ten times the width of the code, so a 1" code is read at arm length and a 2" code from about a foot and a half away. If the sticker will be read from across a room or from a passing car, scale up hard: at ten feet you are looking at a code a foot wide.
Quiet zone, contrast and why matte wins here
A QR code needs a clear margin around it - usually described as four modules, meaning four of the small squares that make up the code - and printing a border or a logo inside that margin is the most common reason a code fails to scan. Contrast matters as much: dark code on a light background, never the reverse, and never a gradient or a photo behind the modules. Glossy laminate reflects overhead light straight back into a phone camera, which is why we set this page to matte.
Outdoors, on glass, and on the packaging itself
Laminated vinyl is waterproof and holds up outdoors, so a code on a shop door, a delivery vehicle or a sign is a sticker job. A code that has to go on the inside of a window and be scanned from the street is cling work, printed mirrored so it reads the right way round through the glass. On clear vinyl a code needs white behind it: our dynamic codes get white ink, and a code in your own file should sit on a white panel. Holographic film shifts color across a code, so keep the code on a solid light panel there.
Questions people ask about these
Do you generate the QR code for me?
Yes, free. Tick Add a free dynamic QR code, paste your link and choose where the code sits: beside your design, inside it, or wherever our designer thinks best. The code opens your link through a short stickersfox.com address, so you can change the destination later in My QR codes without reprinting. If you prefer your own code, put it in your artwork and we print it exactly as supplied.
What is the smallest QR code sticker that still scans?
Keep the code itself at about an inch square or larger for a phone held at arm length, and leave a clear margin around it. That means a 2" sticker if you also want a line of text; a 1" sticker leaves no room for the quiet zone and is where most scanning problems start.
Matte or glossy for a QR code?
Matte. Glossy laminate reflects ceiling lights and sunlight back into the camera, and a bright highlight across the middle of a code stops it reading. Matte scatters that light instead.
Can a QR code be printed on clear or holographic vinyl?
On clear, yes, with white behind the whole code: our dynamic codes get white ink, and a code in your own file should sit on a white panel. Holographic film shifts color across a code, so keep the code on a solid light patch there and scan the proof before you approve.
Can I put my logo in the middle of the code?
Our free dynamic codes are plain black on white, which scans most reliably. If you want a logo inside the code, make it in a QR tool that adds error correction for it and put it in your file; we print the file as supplied, and the proof lets you scan the code before it goes to press.
Will an outdoor QR sticker keep working?
The material does its part: laminated vinyl is waterproof and holds its print outdoors for years. What ages is the link behind the code: with our dynamic code you change it in My QR codes, and with your own code, point it at an address you control.
Will I see a proof before I pay?
Yes, for most files. Upload your design and the proof appears on screen in seconds, with the cut line, at the size and shape you chose - before you pay. If a file needs a designer's eye, we email the proof instead, and changes are free until it is right. Nothing prints until you approve it.
