How to get it right
What the white ink does
On a clear label, colors need something behind them or they look thin against the container. By default we print white ink behind the colors, which keeps them bold, and that same white layer is how you get white lettering on clear glass. Parts of the label with no print stay transparent, so the glass shows between letters, around a logo or inside a ring. That is how the printed-on-glass look is made. Design with the see-through areas in mind: a solid background is a printed area, so it will not be transparent.
Dark container, light container, "no white"
The container behind the label decides how the artwork looks. On dark glass or dark contents, white ink and white lettering stand out sharply. On pale or clear contents, white lettering has little contrast, so plan the artwork in darker colors instead. If you want the colors printed without the white layer, write "no white" in the order notes and the order is set up that way; without the white layer, the container shows through the colors. The designer emails your proof, so look at it next to your real bottle or jar before you approve it.
Overcoat, not laminate
Clear labels are protected by an overcoat, not by a laminate film, and the finish is glossy. The vinyl is waterproof and dishwasher-safe. Is white ink included on clear labels?
Yes. White ink is printed behind the colors by default so they stay bold. To print without it, write "no white" in the order notes.
