How to get it right
What the white layer actually does
Clear vinyl has no white base to print on, so ink applied directly to it takes on the color of whatever is behind the sticker — a dark car window, a colored jar, or a wood surface all show through and shift how your colors read. A layer of white ink printed underneath the colored parts of your design blocks that background color, so a red logo stays red and a multi-color design keeps its intended contrast, no matter what the sticker ends up stuck to. This underlay is on by default because most designs — logos, text, photos — depend on it to read correctly.
When to skip the underlay instead
Some designs are meant to let light and background through on purpose — a subtle wordmark on a glass door, a design meant to look etched into a window, or artwork where seeing the surface behind it is the whole point. In those cases, request the fully see-through version in your order notes and we'll print without the white layer, so every part of the design lets light and color pass through it evenly. This works best with simpler designs and darker or higher-contrast colors, since very light or pastel tones can look faint without the underlay's support.
Checking the result before it prints
Because the underlay changes how a design actually looks once printed, a free digital proof shows the real result on clear vinyl — with or without white ink, whichever you've chosen — before production starts. If the colors read differently than expected once you see the proof, you can request unlimited revisions or switch the underlay choice before approving, and nothing goes to print until you sign off. Production runs about 2 business days after that approval, with free US shipping on every order.
Questions people ask about these
Is white ink an upcharge or an add-on I need to request?
It's included by default at no extra step — every clear sticker order gets the white-ink underlay unless you specifically ask us to skip it in your order notes for a fully see-through result instead.
How do I know if my design needs the white underlay?
If your design has a logo, text or a photo meant to stay a consistent color no matter the background, keep the default underlay. If you want the design itself to be transparent — light passing through it, not just around it — request the see-through version instead.
Will removing the white ink make my colors look washed out?
It can, especially with light or pastel colors, since there's nothing behind them to hold their tone against a dark or busy surface. Darker, higher-contrast designs generally hold up better without the underlay.
Can part of my design have white ink and part not?
That level of control isn't a standard option — the underlay applies to the design as a whole. If you have a specific split in mind, describe it in your order notes and we'll tell you what's possible before your proof.
Does the proof actually show the white ink effect, or just the artwork?
The free digital proof shows the design as it will actually print on clear vinyl, including how the white underlay affects the final colors, so you're approving the real result rather than a mockup.
Does this apply to every clear sticker, or just some sizes?
It applies across every clear sticker order regardless of size or shape — the choice is between the default underlay and the see-through option, not something tied to a particular size.
