How to get it right
Cropping a photo to fit a 10 x 3 strip
A 10 x 3 sticker is more than three times wider than it is tall, and a phone photo is much closer to square. The picture has to be cropped, and cropped hard. Pick a photo with a wide subject, such as a team in a row or a boat at a dock. Or keep a tight square crop at one end and give your words the other two thirds. Use the original file, not a screenshot or a copy saved from social media. As a rule of thumb, about 3,000 pixels across gives a sharp print at ten inches. If the photo is too soft for the size, the free proof is where you find out, and a real person checks the size and the cut line there too.
Making a photo readable from a car length back
A bumper sticker is read from a moving car, so a photo loses detail fast. One clear subject on a plain background beats a busy scene. A dog's face, a team jersey or a single truck holds up. A group of twelve faces turns to mush. Keep the words to a handful and set them large on a solid color block beside the photo, not over the picture where they fight the detail. Dark photos take light type and bright photos take dark type. Look at the proof zoomed out to the size of a postage stamp. Whatever still reads at that size is likely to read from a car length back. Put the sticker on a smooth, flat stretch of the bumper or tailgate, clean and dry.
