How to get it right
Milestone posters people actually read
The posters that get attention at a 40th or a 60th are the personal ones: photos from each decade, the headlines from the year the guest of honor was born, a list of things people love about them. They are read up close and slowly, so they need room - 24x36 gives a timeline or a photo collage space to breathe. A simple welcome sign with a name and a number needs far less.
Kids' parties and one-offs
For a child's party, the poster is usually the backdrop for photos: the child's name and age large enough to read in every picture taken in front of it. Choose a size that fits behind a table - 24x36 or 20x30 - and put the name in the top half, where it stays visible above the table and the guests in every photo.
After the party
Posters print on semi-gloss paper that does not fuse to frame glass, so a milestone poster can be framed afterward and kept. Production is two business days after proof approval, and shipping is free and takes 3-5 business days, rolled in a tube.
Sizing a photo booth backdrop, not a sign
A photo booth backdrop is a different job than a welcome sign: guests stand in front of it and it fills the frame of a phone photo taken from a few feet away, so it needs to read as a bold pattern or a big graphic rather than fine print meant to be studied up close. 30x40 or 36x48 fills the frame behind seated guests or a waist-up photo; for a head-to-toe backdrop behind a standing adult, type a custom size up to 48x72. Simple, high-contrast designs - a name, a number, a repeating pattern - hold up better in photos than a poster crowded with small text.
Mixing old photos into a multi-decade collage
A photo collage that spans several decades usually mixes recent phone photos with much older prints or scans, and the older ones are often lower resolution than anything taken in the last few years. Small photos inside a busy collage hide that softness reasonably well, but a single old photo blown up on its own will look noticeably soft next to sharper, newer shots placed right beside it. Send the highest-resolution version you can find of each photo - a scan from the original print beats a photo of a photo taken on a phone - and our designer flags any image that will not hold up at the size you have chosen before the proof goes out for approval.
Questions people ask about these
What size should a birthday welcome sign be?
18x24 inches is plenty for a name, an age and a line of welcome. Photo collages and timelines want 24x36.
Can you design the poster for me?
We print your design and check it before the proof. Upload the artwork, and our designer flags anything that will not print well.
Can I frame it after the party?
Yes - the semi-gloss paper does not stick to frame glass, and our sizes match standard ready-made frames.
How far ahead should I order?
About ten days to two weeks. Production is two business days after proof approval, and free shipping takes 3-5 business days.
Can I order one poster?
Yes - one per design is a normal order.
What size works well as a photo booth backdrop for a birthday party?
30x40 or 36x48 works behind seated guests or for waist-up photos; for a head-to-toe shot of a standing adult, type a custom size up to 48x72. Keep the design bold and high-contrast rather than full of small text, since it will mostly be seen in phone photos taken a few feet away, not studied up close.
Some of my old photos for the collage are low resolution - can I still use them?
Often yes, especially printed small within a busy collage where the softness is less noticeable. A single old photo blown up on its own is more likely to look soft; our designer checks every image before the proof and tells you if one won't hold up at the size you picked.
