How to get it right
How big can my photo go?
For 300 DPI at full size a photo needs width in pixels equal to the print width in inches times 300: 4800 pixels for 16 inches, 7200 for 24. Modern phone photos usually handle 11x14 and 16x20 well, and often 18x24. Beyond that a camera original does better. Viewed from across a room, a large print needs less than that - which is exactly the judgment our designer makes on your file before the proof.
Use the original, not a copy
The single biggest cause of a soft photo poster is uploading a copy: a screenshot, a picture saved from social media, or one forwarded through a messaging app. Each throws away most of the resolution. Upload the original file from the phone or camera and the print has everything the photo actually captured.
Square photos stay square
Square photos do not have to be cropped into a rectangle - we print 15x15, 20x20, 24x24 and 36x36. Every poster prints on semi-gloss paper that does not stick to frame glass. Posters up to 15 inches ship flat in a rigid mailer and larger ones rolled in a tube, with free US shipping in 3-5 business days after two business days in production.
Matching your photo's shape to the print size
A phone photo is usually close to a 4:3 or 3:2 shape, while a poster size like 16x20 or 11x14 is closer to 4:5 - which means most photos need either a crop or a white border to fill the page cleanly, and cropping is the choice that fills the whole sheet with the image. Check the crop preview before approving the proof so a head, a horizon line or a caption is not cut off at an edge you did not expect; the fix is usually as simple as picking a slightly different size that matches the photo's shape more closely, such as 12x18 for a photo shot in landscape.
Printing an old or scanned photograph
A photograph scanned from a print rather than shot digitally can still make a good poster, but the scan has to be done at a high enough resolution to matter - a flatbed scanner set to at least 600 DPI for the original print size gives a file with real detail to work with, where a phone photo of the photo taken on a table does not. Old prints often have color that has shifted with age; we print the file as it comes in, so any color correction needs to happen before you upload it. Our designer still checks the scanned file's resolution before the proof, the same as any other photo.

Can I print a phone photo as a poster?
Yes. Phone photos usually print well at 11x14 and 16x20, often at 18x24. Our designer checks the resolution before the proof and tells you if a size is too big for the file.
Why did my photo look blurry when printed large?
Usually because a copy was uploaded - a screenshot or a social media download - instead of the original. Upload the original file from your phone or camera.
Can you print a square photo?
Yes - 15x15, 20x20, 24x24 and 36x36 inches.
Can I order one print?
Yes. One poster per photo is a normal order.
Will it fit a standard frame?
Yes - 11x14, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36 all match ready-made frames, and the semi-gloss paper does not stick to frame glass.
My photo doesn't match the shape of the poster size I want - what happens?
In the calculator you choose Fill the poster (the photo is cropped to fill the page) or Show whole photo (the whole image, with a border where the shapes differ). Check the crop in the free proof before approving; if cropping loses something important, a size closer to your photo's shape usually solves it.
Can I print an old photograph that's only available as a physical print?
Yes, if it's scanned at a high enough resolution - at least 600 DPI at the original print size on a flatbed scanner. A photo of the photo taken with a phone camera does not have enough detail for a poster.
