How to get it right
Hull sides, transom and the waterline
A boat decal has a short list of good spots: the hull side near the bow, the transom, the console, the cooler lid and the tender. Keep it above the waterline, because we make no claim for a decal that sits under water. Above the line, the waterproof vinyl sheds rain and snow. Choose a smooth, clean, fully dry surface, and wipe the spot before you press the decal on. Textured non-slip decking and sharply curved bow flares are hard on any decal, so stick to flat or gently curved areas. The adhesive is permanent, so hold a cardboard mock-up at 36 x 10 against the hull and judge it from the dock before you order.
Name, hailing port and number on one decal
A name reads better long than tall on a hull, which is why 36 x 10 is a sensible start. Set the boat's name large, with the hailing port smaller beneath or beside it, in two or three colors that contrast with the hull. A registration number can be part of the same artwork and prints in full color like anything else. Read your state's rules before you design it and again before you approve the proof, because we print what you send and do not check it against them. The die cut follows the outside edge of the whole design, so there are no individual letters to line up. To preview your name at scale, put it on the 21 ft boat drawing with Try your logo.
One boat, both sides, or a small fleet
Two pieces cover the two sides of the hull, and one uploaded file serves both. The transom is a different shape and layout, so a transom design goes in the cart as its own item. A bigger boat can carry a longer name: any exact size up to 48 x 80 inches is one piece. A charter or rental fleet usually shares one logo across every hull, and each boat's name makes a design of its own. A fishing team can put one crest on the console, the cooler and the trailer so the whole rig matches. If you rent or charter a boat you do not own, ask the owner first, because the adhesive is permanent. For a kayak, see kayak decals.
Questions people ask about these
Can I use this for my boat's registration numbers?
It can print as part of your design. Your state sets its style, size and placement, so check your state's rules before you order. We print what you send and do not check it.
What size should a boat name decal be?
The page opens at 36 x 10 inches on a 21 ft boat drawing, so you can see how long a name reads against a hull. Your own hull is the real guide: measure it, then enter your width and height.
Is it cut vinyl lettering?
No. It is printed art, in full color, cut as one piece around the outside of your design. Individual cut letters are not something we make.
What kind of vinyl is it?
White vinyl with a protective laminate, glossy or matte, printed in full color, and waterproof. It belongs above the waterline.
Can every boat in my fleet have its own name?
Yes. Every name is its own cart item with its own file, and each proof lets you check the spelling before anything prints.
What if I sell the boat?
The adhesive is permanent, and the decal is not made to be removed or repositioned, so it does not follow you to another boat. If a sale may come, decide before you order whether a permanent decal belongs on the hull.
