Custom Kayak Decals

This page opens at 12 x 3 inches, drawn on a 21 ft boat; order two for one name on each side of the bow. The drawing shows a boat much bigger than a kayak, so the same decal will look larger on the real thing. Twelve by three is a long, slim strip that spells a name like Blue Heron in a single line. The cut follows your lettering and any small mark, and the print is full color on laminated white vinyl. Keep it above the waterline, on the flatter stretch near the cockpit. Check the spelling on the free proof before anything prints.

How to get it right

One name, a pair for the bow

A kayak name usually goes on both sides of the bow, so most orders are a pair. The same file is used for both sides, which means one design and one proof. A long, slim strip suits the hull because a name reads best in a single line, without a second row. Add a small mark, such as a heron silhouette, if there is room. The cut follows the outline of the whole design. Paddle boards take a name the same way. For a bigger name on a canoe or a support trailer, type a larger size, since one piece can run up to 48 x 80. A 12 x 3 decal ships flat. Pick glossy or matte in the calculator.

Above the waterline, on the flatter stretch

A kayak hull curves more than a door does. Look for the flatter stretch, usually near the cockpit or along the upper hull, and keep the decal above the waterline. The vinyl is waterproof, so spray and rain run off it. We make no promise for a decal that stays under water. Hulls are made of different materials, and we cannot say how any one of them will hold a decal. The adhesive needs a clean, dry, smooth surface, so wipe the spot clean of sunscreen and lake grime and let it dry fully. A tight curve near the bow is the hardest place for a long decal. The adhesive is permanent, so settle the placement before the decal touches the hull.

A rental fleet or a paddle club: one design per boat

An outfitter numbering a fleet needs a different file for each number. Every file gets its own free proof, and a pair per boat covers both sides of the bow. Ten boats means twenty pieces, so type the total. A shop logo on every boat is one more design at its own size. A paddle club that wants one crest on every member's boat orders one design in a bigger count. Keep the numbers plain and bold, because a two-digit number has to read from the dock. A real person checks the size and the cut line on every proof. Approval starts the clock: the pieces ship the next business day, free in the US.

Questions people ask about these

What size works for naming one kayak?

A 12 x 3 strip fits most names in a single line, and this page opens on it. Measure the flat stretch of your hull and type the exact width and height if you want something different.

How many pieces does one kayak need?

Two: a name goes on both sides of the bow, so one decal is needed for each side. If you only want one side, order 1.

Where on the hull should the decal go?

On a flatter stretch above the waterline, near the cockpit or along the upper hull. A tight curve near the bow is harder for a long decal.

Will it hold up on the water?

Spray and rain run off waterproof vinyl, but we make no promise for a decal that stays submerged, so keep it above the waterline. Hulls differ, so we cannot say how a given material will hold it.

Can you number a whole rental fleet?

Yes. Send one file for each number and check each free proof. Two pieces per boat cover both sides of the bow, so type the total count.

Can I use a decal on a paddle board or a canoe?

Yes, on a clean, dry, smooth spot above the waterline. The adhesive is permanent, so pick the spot with care.
