How to get it right
Why a clear QR code needs white behind it
A phone reads a QR code by the contrast between dark squares and a light field. Print dark squares on clear vinyl over a dark bottle and there is no light field left - the code disappears. White ink under the code puts that field back. Tick Add a free dynamic QR code and paste your link, and our designer puts the code on white for you. If the code is in your own file, keep it inside a white panel or a white rounded square in your artwork, and let your logo or text around it go see-through if you like.
Where clear works better than white
Clear is the choice when the surface is part of the look: amber or green glass bottles, jars with the product showing, a glass door, a colored or kraft box, a laptop lid. A white sticker on those reads as a label; a clear one reads as printed on. If the surface is white or light already, a plain white sticker does the same job and the code is just as sharp.
Size and placement
A code scans from roughly ten times its width: 1.5 to 2 inches works on a product held in the hand, 3 inches or more on a door or a shelf read from a step away. Keep the code on a flat part of a bottle rather than across a tight curve, and leave a margin of white around it at least four of its small squares wide. Clear stickers are waterproof vinyl with a protective overcoat.

Will a QR code on a clear sticker scan?
Yes, when the code sits on white ink - which we print under the design by default. Without a light background behind it, a code on clear vinyl over a dark surface does not scan.
Can everything except the code be see-through?
Yes. Put the code on a white panel in your artwork and leave the rest of the design on transparent; say so in the order notes and the proof shows exactly where the white goes.
