How to get it right
Reading from the sidewalk, not just up close
Store hours, a phone number or a logo on a window only earns its space if it is legible from a few feet away on the sidewalk, so text should run larger than it feels necessary up close - figure on at least an inch of height per line for anything meant to be read while walking past. White ink prints under the colored parts of the design where it is needed, and the proof shows it. That keeps the text solid against daylight or interior lighting coming through the glass, rather than letting it fade into whatever is visible behind the window.
Sizing a decal for a door or a full window
Sizes are set by the longer side. Twelve inches suits the glass of a single door at eye level, and the list runs from 4 inches up to 48 for a storefront window with room to work with. Choose Other and type the longer side you measured: it is priced as the next size up on the list, and your free proof shows the exact size before anything prints. The shape can be a square, a circle, a rectangle or a die cut that follows the outline of your design as one piece. Order one piece per door or window rather than stretching a single size across mismatched openings, and leave an inch or two of margin to the frame so the edges sit flat.
Static or permanent, inside or outside
Static cling is the version in this calculator. It holds by static, peels off whole and goes back up on smooth, clean glass. Printed mirrored, it sits on the inside of the glass and reads from the street; printed Normal, it sits on the side it is read from. A cling is not weatherproof: it should not sit in rain or wind. Outside it works where the glass is sheltered - under an awning, in a covered entry, out of the wind - and otherwise it belongs inside. For a decal that stays through weather, choose clear vinyl with permanent adhesive. It is available from a single piece, up to 48 x 80 inches: order it on our glass door decals page and choose Clear vinyl under Material.
Questions people ask about these
Do I apply this to the inside or outside of the glass?
Either. The default print is mirrored for the inside of the glass, so it reads correctly from the street. For the outside, choose Normal print and use glass that is sheltered from rain and wind.
Is a clear window decal the same as a window cling?
On this page the decal is a clear static cling with no adhesive. The permanent version is printed on clear vinyl with adhesive. Both show only your design on the glass.
Can I get a permanent clear decal instead?
Yes. Clear vinyl with permanent adhesive is available from a single piece, up to 48 x 80 inches. Order it on our glass door decals page and choose Clear vinyl under Material; the proof shows it on clear.
Can I order just one?
Yes. One is the starting quantity on this page, and the price per piece goes down as the quantity goes up.
Can I take it off and use it again?
The static cling, yes. It peels off whole and leaves no residue. Keep it flat and clean, and it goes back onto smooth glass.
Will it hold up outside?
A static cling is not weather resistant. Under an awning or in a covered, wind-protected entry it does fine on the outside of the glass. In open rain and wind it will not hold, so mount it inside or choose the permanent clear vinyl.
How do I make sure my logo is visible against the window display behind it?
White ink prints under the colored parts of the design where it is needed, which keeps the logo solid rather than letting the display or daylight behind the glass show through it. You see it on the free proof before anything prints.
