How to get it right
Holiday weeks are why this should never be permanent
Most shops change hours at least four times a year - a holiday week, a seasonal extension, a delivery day, a staff shortage. Printed on adhesive vinyl, each of those is either a scraping job or, far more often, a handwritten note taped over the top, which is the thing that actually makes a storefront look neglected. A cling takes the problem away: print the exception, put it up, take it down.
Where on the glass, and how big
Hours are read standing still, at arm length, by someone already at the door - which means they do not need to be large, they need to be at eye height beside the handle. A 10" or 12" panel is right for that. The mistake is printing hours at the size of a sale sign: it makes the window look busy and does not help anyone read them any better. If the door is glass on both sides of a frame, put the hours on the handle side.
Inside the glass, printed mirrored
Hours go on the inside, printed mirrored so they read correctly from the sidewalk - choose mirror in the calculator and we confirm the side in the free proof. Hours must stay readable with daylight behind them, so they are designed with solid color behind the text rather than thin lettering on an open field.
Questions people ask about these
Why a cling rather than a vinyl decal for hours?
Because hours change. A decal has adhesive and is meant to stay; a cling has none and is meant to come off. Swapping a cling takes two minutes and leaves nothing on the glass.
What size should opening hours be?
Ten to twelve inches on the longer side, at eye height beside the door handle. Hours are read up close by someone already at the door, so bigger is not better here.
Can I order a spare for holiday weeks?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way to handle exceptions. Order the regular hours and a holiday version in the same cart; each is its own artwork and its own proof, and you swap them as needed.
Will it read properly from the street?
Yes if it is printed mirrored and applied to the inside of the glass, which is what we set up in the proof.
Does it leave marks on the door?
No. There is no adhesive, so nothing is left behind when it comes off.
How quickly can I get new hours up?
Two business days in production after proof approval, plus free US shipping with 3-5 business days in transit.
