How to get it right
Which pane, and what diners see behind it
A restaurant window has an audience that most shop windows lack: guests sitting right behind it. White vinyl, the default, is opaque, so wherever the decal covers, the view is gone, and a seated guest looks at its plain back. On Clear vinyl or Static cling, the glass shows around the design. Pick the pane that costs you the least, such as the glass beside the door, the strip above the booth backs or the section behind the host stand. Aim for roughly eye level as people walk past, and compare the panel with the person on the drawing. Smooth glass, wiped clean and fully dry, is what the adhesive wants. On White and Clear vinyl, a permanent adhesive allows no second try. Tape a sheet of paper cut to 30 x 20 inches onto the glass, then judge it from the sidewalk and from a seat before you order.
Name, mark and a line about the food
People choose a restaurant in a glance, so the panel has three jobs: the name, the mark and the kind of food. Set the name on one line with the mark beside it, and add a short line beneath, such as "Wood-Fired Kitchen." A piece 30 x 20 is a wide rectangle, which suits that layout. Strong contrast matters more than the number of colors. A cream name on a deep green field reads from the far curb, and a pale name on a pale field does not. A photo of your signature dish prints well in full color, and it would be a second panel, proofed separately. Test anything you plan to add with one rule: if you would rewrite it on a chalkboard, it does not belong on a permanent decal.
One window, a corner, or a second location
One front window takes one piece. A corner restaurant often wants a matching panel facing each street, so type a count of 2 and both print from one file. A second location can reuse that file later, or you can set a higher count now. The menu, the hours and the specials are separate jobs, and our restaurant window clings page covers them. A small badge for the door is a different size and a different design, so add it to the cart separately and approve its proof on its own. A panel this wide arrives rolled in a tube. A food truck that carries the same logo is covered on our food truck decals page.
Questions people ask about these
What separates a window decal from a window cling?
A decal has a permanent adhesive and is applied to the street side of the glass. A cling has no adhesive and sits inside, so a menu or hours that change belong on clings. On this page White vinyl and Clear vinyl are decals and Static cling is the cling; our restaurant window clings page covers menus and hours.
Will it block the view for guests inside?
On White vinyl, the default, yes: the vinyl is opaque wherever it covers, and a seated guest sees its plain back. On Clear vinyl or Static cling, chosen under Material, the glass shows around the design. See-through perforated film is not offered.
What size restaurant window decal should I order?
Start from the pane: measure it, leave a margin and enter your own numbers. The drawing opens at 30 x 20 inches, and the calculator accepts any width and height between 1 x 3 and 48 x 80 inches (48 x 48 on Static cling).
Can you print white lettering straight onto the glass?
No. Cut white lettering applied straight to glass is a different product, which we do not sell. What we print is one full-color piece shaped to follow the artwork's outline, on White vinyl, Clear vinyl or Static cling. On Clear vinyl the glass shows around the design, and white ink is printed behind the colors.
Do you design the logo for me?
We do not create logos from a written description. Send your own file (SVG, AI, PDF, PNG or JPEG all work) and the designer straightens out the file and sets the cut line; there is no fee.
How soon can I have one before we open?
On White vinyl, making the decal takes 24 hours from approval of the free proof, and it ships the following business day; allow two business days for Clear vinyl or Static cling. After that, USPS carries it free of charge, with tracking, in 3 to 5 business days. We cannot name a delivery date, so work back from opening day and leave room to spare.
