How to get it right
Labels for the message that changes
Adhesive labels fix a message to the glass and leave a ghost of glue when they come off. A cling label does the opposite job: it is for information that changes. Print an OPEN and a CLOSED and swap them at the door, give each table or room its own number, or keep a stand-in label for a display case while a new sign is on order. Each different message is its own design, so write the list of messages before you order.
Which glass, and which side
Static holds on smooth, clean glass and on mirrors; a rough, frosted or textured face will not keep a label up. For a label on a shop door that people read from the street, leave Print on Mirror, so the words run the right way through the glass. For a label on a mirror, or one read from the side it is put on, choose Normal. The designer checks which way round it reads on the proof. Keep labels on the inside of the glass: a cling is not made for rain and wind.
Size, shape and how many
The smallest size is 4 inches on the long side, and the sizes go up to 48. Circle, square and rectangle trim the film to a plain shape; die cut follows the outline of your own artwork. The page opens on a run of circles, not a single piece, so change the quantity if you only need one. The price per label goes down as the quantity goes up, and the calculator shows the exact price before anything goes in the cart. Production takes two business days after you approve the proof; shipping inside the US is free, 3-5 business days.
Questions people ask about these
What is a static cling label?
A printed piece of cling film that holds on smooth glass by static instead of glue. It peels off in one piece, leaves no residue and can be put up again, which is why it suits labels that change.
Can I print static cling labels at home?
Printable cling sheets exist for home printers. Here the labels are printed with white ink under the colors, cut to the shape of your artwork and checked on a proof by a designer, so a logo or a shaped tag comes out clean.
Can static cling labels go on a car window?
On the inside of the glass, yes: smooth, clean glass out of the rain is what a cling is made for. Use Mirror for a label that is read from outside the car and Normal for one read from inside, and keep it off the outside, where rain and wind lift it.
Will a cling label leave residue on the glass?
No. There is no adhesive on a cling, so there is nothing to leave behind.
Should I choose Mirror or Normal for a label?
Mirror if the label goes on the inside of a window and is read from outside. Normal if it goes on a mirror, or is read from the side it is put on.
How small can a label be, and is there a minimum?
The smallest size is 4 inches on the long side. One label is a normal order, and the price per label goes down as the quantity goes up.
