How to get it right
Cab doors, side compartments and the diamond plate to skip
A cab door is a large, flat, visible surface on a wrecker or a flatbed, so it takes the main decal. Use the smooth panel below the window, clear of the handle, the mirror arm and the door seam. A side compartment or tool box with a smooth face can take a smaller piece. The adhesive holds on a surface that is clean, dry and smooth, which rules out diamond plate, ribbed lids and roll-up doors. A truck that works the shoulder every day collects road film and brake dust, so wash the panel and let it dry fully first. Once it is on the door, it stays. Cut a cardboard rectangle at 24 x 16, tape it to the door and look at it from the front of the truck before you order.
The name, the number and a night-time read
Put the company name on the first line and the phone number on the second, both large. Add 24/7 beside the number only if somebody really answers at 3 a.m. One line of services is the most a door can hold: towing, recovery, lockouts. We do not make reflective film, so a night-time read has to come from contrast: cream or white type on a deep navy or green field, or dark type on a light truck. A USDOT or MC number can print as part of your design. We print it as you send it and cannot check it, and the rules for it are yours to check. What you get is a printed piece in full color, cut around the edge of your design, not loose cut lettering and not a magnet.
Both doors, a second truck and a number for every unit
Two pieces cover one truck, and both print from the same file, so the name reads normally on the left door and on the right. A second truck makes four, and any other count can be typed in. If each unit wears its own number, every number is a different design, which means one cart item per number, each carrying its own file and proof. A bigger piece for a side compartment is another item. No file yet? Place the order now and upload it later; we send a link by email. At 24 inches on the long side, the pieces roll into a sturdy tube and ship free within the US. Approve the proof and they ship the next business day.
Questions people ask about these
What size decal fits a tow truck door?
This page opens at 24 x 16 inches, a fair start for the lower door of many wreckers and flatbeds. Measure the smooth panel on your own door, enter the real width and height, and read the price on the page before you pay.
Can the decal go on diamond plate?
No. Diamond plate, ribbed lids and roll-up doors are not smooth, and the adhesive needs a clean, dry, smooth surface. Use the painted cab door or a smooth compartment face.
Do you make reflective tow truck decals?
No. We do not make reflective film. Your decal is laminated white vinyl, printed in full color, so use strong contrast to keep the name and the number easy to read.
Can I put my USDOT or MC number on the decal?
Yes, as part of the design you send. We print it exactly as written and do not check it, and what your truck has to display is yours to check.
What makes a good tow truck decal?
Keep it plain: the company name, the phone number and one line of services, in two or three colors that contrast with the door. There are no stock designs here, so the artwork is yours; a designer tidies the file and sets the cut line at no charge.
What happens to the decal when I replace the truck?
It stays with the old truck, because the adhesive is permanent and not meant to be moved. The new truck gets a new pair, printed from the same file if you keep it.
