How to get it right
Who scans a code on a vehicle
Nobody should scan while driving, so think about people who are standing still: a customer at a food truck window, a neighbor beside your parked van, a homeowner while you unload. That decides where the code goes. Put it on a side door, a rear door or a service window at about hand height. Skip the bumper and the back glass, which other drivers only see from the road. A short line beside the code, such as SCAN TO BOOK or SCAN FOR THE MENU, tells a passer-by what they get. Put your web address in plain type nearby for anyone who would rather not scan. On glass, White vinyl goes on the outside and shows its plain white back from inside, so keep it off the part of the window you look through.
Margin, contrast and the proof
A scanner needs a dark code on a plain light background with clear space all around it. White vinyl, the default, is the safe choice for a code: its white face is the plain light background, so a margin around your code costs you nothing; just leave it empty. On Clear vinyl or Static cling the glass shows around the design, so scan the proof with extra care. Do not crowd the code with a logo, a border or a phone number. Put those in a separate band below or beside the code. Pick a flat spot, because a code that crosses a door seam or a handle recess bends and may stop reading. Matte reflects less light than glossy, which helps on a panel the sun hits. A code in your own file is printed exactly as it is, and we cannot check where it leads. Scan the proof with a phone before you approve it, and scan the decal again when it arrives. We make no promise about how far away a phone will read it.
A pair per vehicle, one code per fleet
Two pieces cover both sides of one van or truck. A single door needs one. A crew of five vans with a code on each side needs ten: choose a quantity tile or type any count. The same code on every vehicle is one design and one proof. If you want to know which van got the scan, give each its own code, and each code becomes its own design. Six inches is the smallest square size button. If people will read the code from farther back, 12 inches is the next step, and any exact size up to 48 x 80 works (48 x 48 on Static cling). A 6-inch decal ships flat. For QR stickers to hand out, see our QR code stickers page. For the big panels on a food truck, see our food truck decals page.
Questions people ask about these
Is it legal to put a QR code on my car?
That depends on your state and on where the decal goes, and we cannot give legal advice. Your state's rules for the panel or window you pick are the ones to check, and the driver's sightline should stay clear.
What size should a QR code decal be?
This page opens at 6 x 6 inches, and the size buttons go up through 12, 24, 36 and 48. If people will scan from a few steps away, go larger. We cannot promise a scan distance, so scan the proof to test the code.
Where do I get the QR code?
Tick Add a free dynamic QR code and paste your link: we make the code, our designer places it on the decal, and you scan it on the proof. Or make one in any QR code service and upload it in your file; we print it exactly as it is.
Can I put a QR code decal on a window?
Yes. White vinyl presses onto the outside of the glass; its white face hides the covered part of the window, and from inside you see only its plain white back. If the glass will need a new message later, choose Static cling under Material: it goes inside the window with no adhesive, on glass that is not tinted.
Can I change the link after the decals are printed?
With our free dynamic code, yes: change where it leads anytime in My QR codes in your account, and the decal stays on the van. A code from another service can change only if that service allows it.
How many should I order for one vehicle?
Two cover both sides of a van or truck, and one covers a single door. For a fleet, set the total you need. The same code on every vehicle is one design.
