How to get it right
What 16x20 is actually good for
It's the size for a single, deliberate wall moment rather than a full feature wall: above a console table, over a desk, centered on a small home-office wall, or as a matching pair on either side of a headboard or doorway. It's too big to disappear into a gallery grid the way an 11x14 does, and too small to carry a large room on its own the way a 24x36 or 30x40 does - it works best as the one print a smaller wall was waiting for, and a matching pair usually beats one oversized print when the wall itself is narrow.
Viewing distance and framing at 16x20
Most people read a 16x20 print from four to six feet away, which is close enough to take in detail and text, making it a better match for a hallway, a desk wall or a console than a room you view from across the floor. It's also a standard ready-made frame size, so a matching frame is usually an off-the-shelf purchase rather than a custom order. Matting a 16x20 frame down to an 11x14 or 8x10 print inside it is a common way to add breathing room around a smaller photo.
Files, paper and delivery
For the sharpest text or logo, send a vector PDF, AI or EPS file. A photo or raster design should be around 4800 by 6000 pixels to hit 300 DPI at full size. Posters print on semi-gloss paper for rich color without a hard glare. Our designer checks every file before the proof and flags anything that won't hold up once it's printed at full size. Production is two business days after proof approval, and since 16x20 is over our 15-inch flat-shipping cutoff, it ships rolled in a sturdy tube - give it a few hours to relax flat before it goes behind glass.
Questions people ask about these
Is 16x20 a standard poster or frame size?
Yes - 16x20 is a standard ready-made frame size, so a finished frame doesn't need to be special-ordered.
How much does a 16x20 poster cost?
Pick 16x20 in the calculator and the price shows immediately - shipping is free either way.
What resolution do I need for 16x20?
About 4800 by 6000 pixels at 300 DPI, or a vector PDF, AI or EPS file; our designer flags it before the proof if the resolution won't hold up at full size.
Does a 16x20 poster come pre-framed?
No - we print the paper only, frame not included, but it's sized to fit standard ready-made frames.
Does 16x20 ship rolled or flat?
Rolled, in a sturdy tube - anything over 15 inches on the longer side ships this way, and 16x20 clears that mark easily.
What's a good viewing distance for a 16x20 print?
About four to six feet - close enough to read detail, which is why it suits a console, hallway or desk wall better than a large room viewed from across the floor.
