How to get it right
Why glossy prints and frame glass do not mix
A glossy surface pressed flat against glass for months, through humid summers and dry winters, can bond to it. You find out when you reframe the print, rotate the art on a wall, or move house, and part of the image stays on the glass. Semi-gloss paper keeps a rich, slightly reflective surface without that behavior, so a print can come out of a frame and go back into another one undamaged.
Match the print to a frame you can buy
Frames are sold in standard sizes, and printing to one of them saves a custom framing bill. Our sizes that match common ready-made frames include 11x14, 16x20, 18x24, 24x36 and, for square frames, 20x20 and 24x24. If you want a mat border inside the frame, print one size down from the frame - an 11x14 print sits in a 16x20 frame with a mat.
From your file to your wall
Upload the photo or artwork, pick the frame size, and approve a free proof - revisions are unlimited until it is right. Production is two business days after approval, and shipping is free and takes 3-5 business days: a print up to 15 inches arrives flat in a rigid mailer, a larger one rolled in a tube. A rolled print wants a day lying flat before it goes into the frame.
Where to find frames in our sizes
Ready-made frames in 11x14, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36 are common sizes at frame shops, home goods stores and craft stores, along with 20x20 and 24x24 for the square sizes - you are not limited to ordering a custom frame to fit a poster from us. Buying the frame locally also means you can hold the actual print up against it before hanging, which is the easiest way to check that a mat border or frame lip is not going to cover part of the design. If a size we print does not match anything sold as a ready-made frame, a local frame shop can still cut a custom frame to it, at their own cost and lead time.
How much a mat border shaves off your image
A mat is not free space - the frame's inner lip and the mat's own border both sit on top of the print's edge, so a two-inch mat can hide close to two inches of image around the whole perimeter. If the design has text or a face near the edge, either build in a blank border when you design the file or print one size down and let the mat cover only white space. There is no fixed rule for how much border to leave, since mat widths vary, so when in doubt, print the size below the frame size and add the mat on top rather than matching them exactly.
Questions people ask about these
Will the poster stick to the frame glass?
No. Our semi-gloss paper is made not to fuse to glass the way fully glossy prints can when humidity changes.
Do you sell frames?
No - we print the poster. Our sizes match the standard ready-made frame sizes, so the print drops straight into a frame you buy locally or online.
What size print fits a 16x20 frame with a mat?
An 11x14 print is the usual choice - it leaves room for a mat border inside a 16x20 frame.
Why does my rolled poster curl in the frame?
It just needs to relax. Lay it flat image side up for a day with light weights on the corners before framing it.
Can I order one print?
Yes. One poster per design is a normal order, with a free proof before printing.
Will a mat border cover part of my design?
It can - a mat sits on top of the print's edge, so anything close to the border can end up hidden. Leave a blank margin in the file, or print one size down from the frame size so the mat covers only white space.
Where can I buy a frame that fits your poster sizes?
11x14, 16x20, 18x24, 24x36 and the square sizes 20x20 and 24x24 are common ready-made frame sizes at frame shops and home goods stores, so you do not need a custom frame for most of our standard sizes.
