How to get it right
White vinyl or clear vinyl
Factory tint and aftermarket film make a rear window dark, and a design with any transparency in it fades into that dark. White vinyl is the safe choice there: it is opaque, so colors stay solid and white lettering stays white on tinted glass, and the cutter follows the outer outline of the artwork. Clear vinyl suits lighter glass and designs with thin lines or open lettering: the glass shows around every part of the design, and white ink is printed behind the colors so they do not wash out. To get it, choose Clear vinyl under Material in the calculator, and the proof shows the result. We do not make cut vinyl lettering, where each letter is a separate piece of single-color film.
Permanent outside, or a static cling inside
White vinyl, and Clear vinyl printed Normal, are made for the outside surface of the window and hold with permanent adhesive. Tint film normally sits on the inside of the glass, so mounting outside keeps the decal clear of the film and its edge. If the message is temporary, such as a for-sale notice or an event pass, choose Static cling under Material: it has no adhesive, it is printed Mirror to sit on the inside of the glass, and it reads correctly from outside. It needs glass that is not tinted, or the tint will hide it.
Placement on a rear window
Two spots ruin a rear window decal. The first is the rear wiper's sweep: measure where the blade travels before you place anything, because a decal in its path gets scraped every time it runs. The second is the middle of the glass, where a decal sits in the driver's view through the mirror. Keep the design in a corner clear of both, and clean the glass with isopropyl alcohol, not a window cleaner with ammonia, before applying. For a strip along the top edge, type the exact width and height, and the second photo frame draws it to scale.
Questions people ask about these
Does this work on tinted windows?
Yes, on white vinyl: it is opaque, so dark tint cannot show through it. On heavily tinted glass, choose white vinyl rather than Clear vinyl or Static cling.
Can I order just one car window decal?
Yes. One is the starting quantity on this page. Choose 2 for a matching pair, or 3, 5, 10 or any typed number for a club or a small fleet, and the price per decal goes down as the count goes up.
Can I get it on clear vinyl?
Yes: choose Clear vinyl under Material in the calculator. The glass then shows around the design, white ink is printed behind the colors, and the proof shows how it will look.
Can I see through it?
Not through white vinyl; it is opaque wherever it covers. On clear vinyl you see through the unprinted areas. Keep any decal out of the driver's sightline, and check your state's rules.
Does the decal go on the inside or the outside of the window?
White vinyl goes on the outside. For a design on the inside of the glass that reads from outside, choose Static cling under Material: it is printed Mirror and works on glass that is not tinted.
How do I remove a car window decal?
Warm it with a hair dryer, then use a plastic scraper to lift it slowly from one corner instead of pulling straight off. Isopropyl alcohol clears the leftover adhesive. The adhesive is permanent, so plan on this process rather than a clean, quick peel.
How fast do car window decals ship?
A real person checks your file and sends a free proof by email. Once you approve it, a white vinyl decal ships the next business day; allow two business days for clear vinyl or static cling. Free US shipping then takes 3-5 business days.
