How to get it right
The three lines a customer looks for
People reading a holiday notice want three answers: are you closed, which days are short, and when do you reopen. Put them in that order, one per line, under a plain heading. For example: closed Thanksgiving Day; open until 2 on Christmas Eve; back at 9 on New Year's Day. Holiday names beat calendar dates on the glass, because a customer thinks Christmas Eve, not the 24th. Leave out the apology and keep the greeting to a few words at the bottom. At 15 inches, four short lines stay readable from a step or two back; if you have more days to list, move up to 18 or 23 inches rather than shrinking the type.
White lettering straight on the glass, and when it needs a backing
The film is clear, and white ink can print lettering that sits directly on the glass with no box around it, the cleanest look for a cafe or salon door. It reads best against a dark interior. Against a bright room or a sunny pane, thin white letters wash out and a solid color block behind the text works better. We lay white ink under a design wherever it needs a solid background, and the proof shows exactly which you are getting; if you want it one way on purpose, say so in the order notes. Print position is Mirror by default, for the inside of the glass. Choose Normal for a notice read from inside the room.
This season's notice, and the swap back
The weekdays move every year, so a cling with days or dates printed on it is this season's version; order it knowing that. A cling that only names the holiday, such as closed Thanksgiving Day, can go back up next year if your hours stay the same. Either way the swap is quick: lift the holiday cling off in one piece, lay it flat with paper on both sides, and put the regular hours back in the same spot so regulars look where they expect. Each version is its own artwork with its own proof, so if you no longer have a regular hours sign, order it in the same cart. For Christmas week, approve the proof by about December 9 to be safe.
Questions people ask about these
What should a holiday hours sign say?
Three things: which days you are closed, which days are shorter, and the day you reopen. Use holiday names rather than dates where you can, and keep it to four or five short lines.
What size is right for holiday hours?
Fifteen inches on the longer side beside the door is where this page opens. If the notice lists many days or has to be read from the curb, go up to 18 or 23 inches.
Can white lettering go straight onto the glass?
Yes. White ink on the clear film prints lettering that sits right on the glass. It reads best when the room behind is dim; if the room is bright, ask for a solid background in the order notes.
How do I switch back to my regular hours?
Take the holiday cling down and put the regular one in the same spot on clean glass, and the door is back to normal. Nothing is left behind, because the film has no adhesive.
Can I change the dates on the same cling next year?
No. Each design prints as its own artwork, so new dates mean a new design and a new proof. A cling that names only the holiday can go back up if your hours stay the same.
When do I order for Thanksgiving or Christmas week?
It takes two business days to print after you approve the proof, then 3-5 business days of free US shipping. For Thanksgiving approve in early November; for Christmas week, by about December 9 to be safe. Faster carriers are a paid option at checkout.
