How to get it right
Why print square at all
Most of the photographs people take now are composed for a square or near-square screen, and most artwork made for social media is square by design. Forcing either onto a 2:3 poster means either cropping off the top and bottom or adding empty bands to fill the frame. A square poster keeps the composition the way it was made, which is why cover-style artwork, logos and phone photos simply look right at this shape.
Choosing between the four sizes
15x15 is a desk-and-shelf size, or a set of three hung in a row. 20x20 holds a wall above a desk or a bedside table on its own. 24x24 is the size for a single statement piece above a sofa. 36x36 is large format - a wall on its own, and a real test of the image, because it needs a high-resolution file to stay sharp.
File size for a square print
For 300 DPI at full size you need 4500 pixels square at 15x15, 6000 at 20x20, 7200 at 24x24 and 10800 at 36x36. Phone photos usually reach the smaller two comfortably. Below the ideal the print still works, just softer; our designer checks the file before the proof and tells you whether it will show.
Hanging a set of square posters as a grid
Square prints are the easiest shape to hang as a matched set because there is no orientation to get wrong - every piece lines up the same way whichever direction you turn it. For a wall grid, leave two to three inches between prints in every direction and keep that gap identical on all sides; the eye catches an uneven gap between frames faster than it notices the images themselves. Three or four 15x15 or 20x20 prints in a single row read as one composition rather than separate posters, which is why the shape suits a series - a set of city skylines, album covers or family photos - better than a single large rectangle would.
Printing album art at poster size
A 12-inch vinyl record sleeve is already square, which makes cover art one of the more natural things to reprint as a square poster - the composition was built for that shape from the start, so nothing gets cropped or padded to fit. 20x20 is the size most people choose for a single sleeve blown up for a wall, and 15x15 works well for a set of several covers hung together. Use the highest-resolution version of the artwork you can find rather than a photo of the physical sleeve, since a photographed cover picks up glare and loses sharp edges around the type. Our designer checks the file for sharpness before the proof either way.
Questions people ask about these
What square poster sizes do you print?
Four: 15x15, 20x20, 24x24 and 36x36 inches.
Can I print an Instagram photo as a square poster?
Yes, and square is the right shape for it. Use the original photo rather than a screenshot - a screenshot throws away most of the resolution.
Are square frames easy to find?
The common square frame sizes are 12, 16, 20 and 24 inches; 20x20 and 24x24 posters fit standard square frames directly.
Can I order one square poster?
Yes - one poster per design is a normal order, with a free proof first.
How are square posters shipped?
A 15x15 ships flat in a rigid mailer that will not bend; 20x20 and larger ship rolled in a mailing tube. US shipping is free and takes 3-5 business days, after two business days in production.
How much space should I leave between square posters hung as a grid?
Two to three inches on every side, kept identical across the whole set. An uneven gap is more noticeable to the eye than any difference between the images themselves, so measure once and repeat it for each print.
Can I print album cover art as a poster?
Yes - square sizes match a record sleeve's proportions exactly, so nothing is cropped. Use the original artwork file rather than a photo of the physical record, which loses sharpness around the type and picks up glare.
