How to get it right
Lettering sized for the curb
A truck at the curb is read from the sidewalk, the neighbor's driveway and a passing car. A common signmaker's rule of thumb is one inch of letter height for every ten feet of reading distance, so a phone number meant to be read from thirty feet wants digits about three inches tall. On a 30 x 12 decal that leaves room for the crew name at four or five inches and one line of services beneath it. Skip the list of every service you offer. Choose strong contrast against the paint: dark letters on a white truck, cream or white on a green one. A photo of a finished lawn prints well in full color, but at thirty feet it turns to a smudge, so keep it small.
Where on the door, and where not
The bottom foot of a truck door takes tire spray, gravel and mud, so keep the decal in the upper two thirds of the panel, above the lowest body crease. Measure the flat door skin between the window line and that crease, and type the exact width and height. Start with a washed, fully dry panel, and press the decal down firmly, in the shade if you can. Grit trapped under a permanent adhesive stays there. Many crews carry a toolbox or a rack behind the cab, and a smaller matching decal on the toolbox lid ties the truck together. We print decals, not wraps, so plan one piece per flat area and let the paint show around it.
A pair for each truck, a bigger piece for the trailer
Order a pair for one truck, because it has two doors and each door gets one piece. A crew with three trucks types 6. The same artwork can print at a different size for each surface: 30 inches on a door, a larger piece on the side of an enclosed trailer, a small one for a toolbox. Each size is ordered on its own. Our trailer decals page opens at a bigger size for the mower trailer, and one piece can run up to 48 x 80. A crew number such as Crew 2, or a separate line for irrigation or tree work, counts as another design and gets a proof of its own. Decide how many designs you need before you order. A 30 x 12 decal rolls into a sturdy tube. Because the adhesive is permanent, decide on the spot first.
Questions people ask about these
How big should the phone number be?
A common rule of thumb is one inch of letter height for every ten feet of reading distance, so three-inch digits read from about thirty feet. The free proof shows your layout at true size so you can judge it.
Can I use the same design on trucks and trailers?
Yes. One file can print at several sizes, from a small toolbox decal up to a large trailer panel of 48 x 80. Each size is ordered on its own.
Can each crew truck have its own number?
Yes, though each number counts as a separate design and is proofed on its own. The simplest setup is one shared logo decal plus a small numbered decal for each truck.
Can you put a photo of my work on the decal?
Yes. A photo prints in full color, gradients and fine detail included. At reading distance a busy photo turns muddy, so a bold logo does more work on a door.
Will the decal stick to a dirty truck?
Not well. The adhesive needs a clean, dry, smooth surface, so wash off dust and road film first. It is permanent, so you get one careful try.
Is this a truck wrap?
No. We print decals: one piece cut to your outline or a simple shape, from 3 inches up to 48 x 80. We do not make wraps, and we do not apply decals for you.
