How to get it right
A size built for full-frame photos
Full-frame and APS-C cameras shoot at a 2:3 ratio, and 12x18 matches it exactly, so a photo straight off the camera prints full-bleed with no cropping decision to make. That's different from 16x20, which is 4:5 and trims a native photo to fit, often cutting into the edges of a composition the photographer meant to keep. For travel shots, portraits or landscape photography where the original composition matters, 12x18 (and 20x30, at the same ratio) keeps what the photographer actually framed in the viewfinder, edge to edge, with nothing decided for you at the print stage.
Where a tall, narrow print works
The narrower shape suits spaces a wider poster doesn't fit well: a hallway wall, a stairwell landing, the strip of wall beside a doorway, or a single accent next to a mirror where a 16x20 would crowd the frame. Portrait orientation reads naturally in these spots; landscape works too if the wall is wide enough to give it room without feeling cramped. The narrow shape suits one strong image better than a layout with several elements competing for space.
Files and how a 12x18 arrives
For a photo, aim for around 3600 by 5400 pixels to hit 300 DPI at full size - a vector PDF, AI or EPS is the better choice for anything with graphics or type. The same semi-gloss paper runs across every poster size on the site, so color and finish match if you're ordering a 12x18 alongside a larger print for the same wall. Production is two business days after proof approval, and since the long side clears our 15-inch cutoff, 12x18 ships rolled in a sturdy tube rather than flat.
Questions people ask about these
Is 12x18 a standard poster size?
Yes - it's one of our sixteen standard sizes, and its 2:3 shape matches photos from DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
How much does a 12x18 poster cost?
Select 12x18 in the calculator to see the exact price right away; standard shipping is free.
Does a 12x18 print crop my photo?
No, if the photo came straight off a DSLR or mirrorless camera, which shoots the same 2:3 shape. Phone photos are usually 4:3; your free proof shows exactly where the trim falls before printing.
What resolution do I need for 12x18?
About 3600 by 5400 pixels at 300 DPI, or a vector PDF, AI or EPS file; our designer reviews it before the proof.
Does 12x18 ship rolled or flat?
Rolled, in a sturdy tube - the 18-inch side puts it just past the cutoff for flat shipping.
Is 12x18 good for a hallway or narrow wall?
Yes - it's narrower than 16x20, which makes it a better fit for tight, tall wall spaces like a hallway or stairwell landing.
